About the Powell Gardens Blog
Welcome! This is a great place to stay connected with Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s botanical garden. Our bloggers will take you behind the scenes to let you know about opportunities to play, volunteer, share and be a part of this special place.
About Our Authors
Learn from Alan Branhagen, our Director of Horticulture, who writes weekly about gardening, nature and what’s happening in the world of horticulture. Our Development Department will bring you updates on our special fund-raising events and share stories about how your gifts help the Gardens grow. You’ll also find regular updates on events and classes, plus stories about how Powell Gardens has changed lives in ways both big and small from other contributors around the Gardens.
About the Gardens
Powell Gardens is a private, not-for-profit botanical garden located just east of Kansas City, Missouri. Our mission: to be an experience that embraces the Midwest’s spirit of place and inspires an appreciation for the importance of plants in our lives.
Set on 970 acres of lush, rolling hills and windswept meadows, Powell Gardens offers breathtaking display gardens, interesting architecture, a nature trail and a year-round calendar of special events and classes for the entire family.
The Gardens receive support from foundations, corporations, individuals, the Friends of Powell Gardens and income generated through admissions, gift shop sales and rentals. For more information, see our profile at DonorEdge.
Powell Gardens is known for its spectacular garden displays incorporating native plantings and its contemporary architecture by the architectural firm originally established by Fay Jones, now Maurice Jennings Architects. The Gardens can be rented for weddings, receptions, ceremonies and other private events.

*Thanks to our Powell Gardens Friends Member Scott Beck, who granted permission for reuse of his photography. His young son is captured enjoying the Big Apple. Also, to Amy H., whose inspired photography caught the precious moment of her daughter pondering the beauty beneath the bridge, both featured on our front page. You will find many beautiful and inspiring snapshots from Scott and Amy in their Flickr streams.
